"O Mármore e A Murta" (The Marble and The Myrtle) is an investigation of the pre-colonial indigenous footpaths that connected South-American peoples between what is now the Brazilian southern coast all the way to the Peruvian Andes crossing Paraguay and Bolivia. The project relies on history, ethnography and archeology to identify the location of these long forgotten trails from a time when the continent spoke thousands of languages and housed hundreds of different cultures. Post-colonial states had an interest in erasing that memory to justify their own frontiers but through research it is possible to retrace most of the way. The goal is to produce images of these landscapes in their current state and confront them with their largely unknown legacy. This video covers the first excursion of the project: a five day walk from São Paulo to São Vicente, one of the starting points of the Peabiru Trail.
